This was taken waiting for my train. Initial irritation at a delay turned into a spontaneous photo opportunity as the cause of the delay rumbled through the station – a slow freight train. Freight trains hold a certain fascination for me, that idea of hopping onto an empty truck as it slowly hauls past. I guess it is classic romanticism straight from an ‘American dream’ film. Taking your chances in a new world that the train takes you too.

Maybe there was something of this fascination for the guy standing in front of me too, for he was intently watching the carriages as they came up the platform. I had only a moment to capture him with a suitable freight container behind, one with bold writing. I also chose not to move and to keep the pillar as it offered a fixed contrast to the train. The lighting was luck as it added a theatrical feel to it as though it was staged.

An example of seeing an opportunity and then waiting for a willing volunteer. This photo was simply a case of waiting for the right person to walk into position. I was waiting for my dad at the arrivals at St Pancras and with his train running late, I started looking around and saw a wonderful scene – the station concourse, the converging lines, the classic St Pancras station silhouette, all back-lit by a bright early morning sun. It just needed something else, a focal point, a…person. No lack of people, and someone duly walked up the escalator and even more kindly, they walked across the concourse rather than towards me. It was so simple, and I almost felt guilty. Almost.
